I somehow overlooked the initial comment on this one.

The problem is exactly to do with modules_install running depmod!

modules_install runs depmod on the build system, whereas it needs to be run on the target system, e.g. as an RPM postinstall script.  Also, if it find the modules at all, they will be in the wrong place.

The problem with the suggested workaround is that one then has to fix up ownership and possibly permissions.
