Yes the scope of the discussion has generalized too far. Your patch in
issue #16725 that adds the challengeuser parameter provides useful
functionality and does no harm. Unlike well intentioned grand schemes
(such as my type=realm) that lack follow-through, this is a positive
enhancement that in my view can be safely patched in to the trunk now
