The specific problem, from a message up the thread:

For small systems it helps having a read-only /usr . Thus you put most
of the sound files at /usr/share/asterisk/sounds and make astdatadir
/usr/share/asterisk .

Anyway, what would using gettext buy you beyond what is already
implemented today?
