I think the patch looks fine, and I agree that it seems useful.
However, it is a new feature, and based on existing policy, I do not
think it should go in Asterisk 1.4.

However, feel free to leave a patch on the issue that applies to 1.4 for
use by the reporter and anyone else if they choose to do so.  Leave a
note to make it clear that it would be unsupported.

Just merge it to trunk only after incorporating oej's suggestions.
