[asterisk-dev] Building asterisk apps, features, etc. outside of Asterisk tree

I was wondering (as I struggle with patch hell) if there was an easy way 
to build an app or feature or resource outside of the Asterisk tree, as 
is done in linux with "make -C ... modules M=`pwd`" or as in Apache with 
"apxs".

Am I looking in the wrong places?
