The fork will just be people staying with 1.4, just like they stuck
with 1.2. It's very hard to successfully fork Asterisk; the Callweaver
people have shown that.

A successful fork with backwards compatibility as its primary goal is
even more unlikely; software maintenance without development is no fun
at all. It would require companies to actually pay people to work on
the fork -- and right now there are very few fulltime paid
Asterisk-developers not employed by Digium (If I'm wrong about that, I
apologize).
