True. Any Solaris/*BSD guys here? Please say something.
Would /devices on Solaris enable you to do something similar?

Hehe, even busybox has udev clone (called mdev).
However, if a small embedded system has fixed Dahdi hardware,
nothing prevents them from statically mknoding the device files
at the factory.
