As a comment...

A while ago I added CLI commands for reading and changing the global  
channel variables.

This was done after a discussion with Thorsten on counters. With  
those small changes, you can run a cron
script each night to reset variables containing counters that you  
implement in the dialplan.

I don't remember if he completed the project and made all global  
variables reachable through snmp,
but that was where we where heading.
