If you look into the code (this is the -dev list after all :-) ) you
will see that we do support
xml/PIDF presence notification in SIP.

However, Asterisk is a PBX and delivers call states only. We do not
have presence and
one of the decisions on the developer's meeting in Atlanta was that
we do not want to
become a presence server, but want to cooperate with existing servers
like Jabber and
deliver our call states to them, so that an aggregation/policy
handler can decide what
to do with a user's presence based on that information.

The res_jabber module we have in 1.4 and trunk is a good step
forward, created by
Matt O'Gorman who has been working with Jabber/Asterisk integration
for a long time
and done a very good job.

Philippe Sultan has joined the Asterisk Jabber team and and have done
a considerable
amount of testing and fixes to the code. During the developer's
meeting we also had
the presence of Peter StAndre from the Jabber foundation and
discussed this in depth.

I haven't seen any similar interfaces to SIMPLE servers like the one
we are using
in res_jabber. Maybe that's something you can help us explore.

/O
