it's not a contrived example at all. i've hit the same issue when i had the 
following:

SIP/1234 --- Asterisk1 <-- SIP --> Asterisk2 --- SIP/1234

for the same reasons you've outlined, SIP/1234 on Asterisk1 cant call 
anyone on Asterisk2 and vice versa, since From: would match the sip.conf 
entry for 1234 in the other Asterisk.
