"Asterisk is not a softswitch" is not a good argument for not  
improving its scalability, IMHO. reading packets directly from  
kernelspace without calling for them will improve performance pretty  
much, i'd guess two or three times more calls per box. If we want  
asterisk better, we should look for opportunities, not merely saying  
"it's another approach".
