This is correct, but is no longer a significant issue. All major distros 
(and most of the minor ones) are on 2.6 kernels now.

No, patches must be posted via our tracking system at bugs.digium.com. 
However, there is no 'simple' way to do this; sysfs is not a filesystem 
like procfs where you can just add files and directories, there is quite 
a bit more involved and doing it 'properly' will involve quite a bit of 
work.

For now I would suggest just modifying your own copy of Zaptel to put 
the stuff in /proc/driver/zaptel or wherever you want it.
