FYI.

I don't have my licenses on the right machine to play with, but I played 
enough to note that by simply switching between SVN checkouts, the 
transcoding function stopped (with the checkout I just did minutes ago) 
and started (with r8786).

Sorry for the skeletal report, but maybe it will save somebody some 
head-scratching along the way. . . .
