I would hazard that this is not true except in the MINORITY of cases.
Something as complex as echo cancellation will use application
specific hardware and software which will be very good at doing EC
efficiently and with an otherwise low-power CPU.
The general purpose (eg. Intel) CPU will have to jump through hoops
and use lots of clock cycles to match this and is relatively
inefficient.
(At least I believe that to be the case!)
