It does just that for me, and is tremendously helpful as a debugging aid.

I don't know what in particular I may have done to make it work, but I 
do always run at a verbose level of "1000000000000," which Asterisk will 
happily do.

If you pass it channel variables as an argument, at least in my CVS-HEAD 
install, it will print their values to the CLI as the application is 
executed.

I'm not sure why others are acting as if that doesn't happen; it most 
certainly does.  That said, I don't know why it isn't working in your case.
