I've been having the same problem.  I've tried 1.2.0-beta1 (multiple 
times) on a P2-400MHz Celeron and a Via C3 at 600 MHz, both running 
Debian 3.1 (Sarge).  However, my P4 with Fedora Core 4 compiles and 
installs it just fine.  Maybe there's an issue with older versions of 
certain build tools?
