[Asterisk-Dev] answer-sound(void) in chan_alsa.c -- why?

Can someone explain the purpose of 'answer_sound' in
chan_alsa.c?  It's called by 'alsa_answer' and seems
only to used to turn the sound off -- doesn't that
defeat the purpose of dialing in the first place?  
Furthermore, it sets a 'nosound' flag which is global,
so the sound is shut off until you shut down and
restart.  Am I missing something?
