My mistake; I have terminfo installed.

$ ls -l /usr/share/terminfo/s/screen
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 1342 2004-02-17 18:22 /usr/share/terminfo/s/screen

$ md5sum /usr/share/terminfo/s/screen
9715c0afc29f18e167d933c96f0ff6b8  /usr/share/terminfo/s/screen

and just to make sure I'm not crazy:

$ echo $TERM
screen
