There is already the beginning of a refcounted object infrastructure in 
Asterisk, and a new implementation of it will be in CVS shortly after 
the end of the month, if things go as planned.

The plan is to move as much of Asterisk's objects over that as makes 
sense, and that certainly includes channels, which will provide a great 
deal of benefits (including being able to make separate channel lists, 
having hashtable driven channel lists for faster searching, etc.)
