I've always been more of a Harbison/Steele fan anyway

which in it's fifth edition is a little more up to date
either.

Though titled a reference manual it can also be used as
a text book. Not many beauty code guidelines though, just
the bare tech with many annotations and examples coming
from C compiler coders.
