The short and the sweet of it all is: 

1. Make your code work.
2. Make your code readable\maintainable.
3. Make your code efficient.

There will always be a balance there.  But keep those things in mind.
Remember these are "Guidelines"  We can run this thread for a week
talking about the + and - of one method vs. another and that is probably
a conversation better for a different list, but the point of guidelines
is to guide us to put together a working, maintainable, usable end
result.
