What's wrong with writing to a temp file and then moving?
Also, that'd be a breaking change...

I would suggest making Asterisk not only look for .call-files, but also make
sure it's chmod +x before acting!
That would make it easy to create files, and when finished, chmod +x to make
Asterisk handle it.
Why? Because in this manner, u can make the "outgoing" dir writable to
specific users which only has the permissions to create .call-files.
