It has so many dependencies mostly because it is a complete Asterisk
distribution rather than a management interface for it.

I have a beginning of a package for it at http://tzafrir.org.il/APT.html
with saner dependencies and with most of the functionality. 

(Naturally using those packages has a greater dependency on using
Debian/Sarge, but you can implement them for your distro).
