It has nothing to do with 'proper use' -- it's confusing as is and should be
fixed. 'i' should work properly, and until it does you have given a great
example of using _..

${INVALID_EXTENSION} as mentioned by someone else.

I agree; I want to fix 'i' and remove this confusion, and eliminate the use of
_. matching the special extensions. Just because it *CAN* be done doesn't
mean it SHOULD be done. We're trying to make Asterisk better, just as you
are. :-)
