You don't know me very well.  I am a HUGE proponent of allowing people to 
shoot themselves in the foot.  I am merely saying that I cannot think of a 
single example of where an administrator benefits from capturing the special 
extensions with _., and your lack of example leads me to believe that you 
don't have one, either.

I disagree; This bounty's created some VERY GOOD discussion, and I would love 
to see some real-life useful examples of using _. to capture special 
extensions.
