I happen to be travelling a lot and actually know about the difference
between wishful thinking and reality when it comes to make VoIP calls
in hotels, airports, public WiFi hotspots etc.

I have yet to see anything that works as consistently and reliably as
IAX. Fellow co-travellers with their X-Lite X-ten tunneling setups and
Skype have not as consistenly nor reliably been able to make calls as
I have using Asterisk on my Powerbook, which is plug and play if you
use the Asterisk Assistants for MacOSX.

People will always be attracted by proprietary vendors who want to
unload their garbage on Joe Average. Take Microsoft with their
portfolio of the worst technology products in the history of mankind.

Having said that, I do agree that we need to do more in the
ease-of-use nice eyecandy GUI department with Asterisk and IAX based
solutions.
