What have you contributed to the explicitly expressed aim of this
thread to discuss the what and how and stay away from the whether or
not as you had kindly been asked to.
I did ask for people who want to argue against using zeroconf to start
their own thread and not hijack the one I started for the sole purpose
of clarifying design questions.
I encourage you again to do just that. Start your own thread. Please.

No it doesn't. Read the zeroconf specs and the papers about mDNS.

AFAIK Zeroconf is Sun Microsystems' baby. Apple only made it popular.
