yes i know that.
but i've found the following notes on intels sample codes which Daniel
patches work on them. so the question remains: does it work with
2.6.x?

  Software requirements:
    * Intel^   IPP 4.1 for Linux*, or later
    * Linux* distributions with 2.4.x kernels
    * Intel^   C++ Compiler for Linux 7.0, or later
    * GNU* Compiler g++ 2.96, or later
