Similar story - my sister had her own line at my mom's house back when she was still at home. About 10 years later, I was helping my mom set up my sister's old room to be a home office. I plugged a modem into the existing wall jack (assuming it was wired to the house line) and a phone into the modem. A few minutes later, the phone rang - but the rest of the phones in the house didn't. Later, I picked it up and dialed my mom's number. The other phones rang, my mom answered, and we talked. :)
Aparently it's not unusual for stuff like this to happen...
