That still seems awfully short.  100ms?  1/10 of a second?  Jeez I am all for 
efficiency in communications but this seems awfully short, especially if we 
have to talk to all manner of marginal equipment out there.

My uneducated (but engineering-based) sugestion would be in the 250ms range.  
It's still short enough not to be annoying but long enough that it's a dog's 
age in terms of electronic equipment.
