I agree as well about not adding new features to deprecated modules for the reasons mentioned. Deprecated modules should be bug fix only in my opinion. I might go so far to say security fix only even, but maybe that's being a little too restrictive :-)

The point of keeping it around for a while longer is to give people time to move away from the deprecated module.
