Hmm, so null frames cannot be freed later? I thought that was the point of replacing it like that, a placeholder so that a valid frame object still existed.
I actually don't have a use case myself for dropping voice frames in particular, so if it was just that we could axe that one. It does seem like what you mentioned may be related only to those frames: https://github.com/asterisk/asterisk/blob/b4347c486150653ec7ce1d129e8f9017c69344da/main/channel.c#L10845
