Alexander,

Sorry to conflict with your other changes but I believe something like this is needed to make install_prereq more maintainable and avoid continuous growth.  The intent is to cherry-pick this to the other branches if/when it's decided that we want to go in this direction.

Note I've only tested './contrib/scripts/install_prereq test' and only from Fedora 26.  It seems to work.
