Alexei patch works fine and is quite simpler from what I was doing.

I endorse it by submitting it here. I have also adapted the commit message.

I'm not sure what is the correct way to credit Alexei for being the author of the patch in the commit message. If I need to modify the commit message for that please point me in the right direction.
