Patch Set 4:

I rebased the changes on top of my recent Makefile fix, and added an autoconf test for the systemd directory (Note: may be empty. This is not reflected in the current Makefile snippet).

Any comments on the actual content of the file, besides the Makefile snippet?

Now we can argue on what should or shouldn't be in the Makefile.
