I'm going to close this out as "Won't Fix" :-(

There's no movement on the {{ast_storage}} work, and there is unlikely to be any movement on it. With the advent of ARI, the notion of reworking {{app_voicemail}} is unpalatable.

That is, when we can write a complete VoiceMail replacement in JavaScript, injecting the risk of hacking apart {{app_voicemail}} just isn't worth it - unless someone wants to actively do it.

If that changes, I'd be happy to reopen this.
