You may be right - the PING may be catching it here.
Well, {{realloc}} can fail even if you have a lot of memory - if you don't have enough contiguous memory to allocate a particular chunk, it will fail even if you technically have sufficient memory.
Since you're able to reproduce this pretty easily (and neither Rusty nor I can), let's try the round 2 of the patch - it will only attempt a {{realloc}} if we have a payload body, will bail out if the write on the PING fails, and only attempts to write a body out if we have a payload.
