Bad magic number typically would trigger a segfault.

This patch is covering a symptom rather than the real bug. The "bad magic
number" message is a very bad thing and should _never_ occur. I don't have
a problem with this patch, but someone needs to figure out what is passing
in the invalid pointer and fix that, too.
