Just this past week, my client got interested enough in the gtalk web
client again to allow me to try pier's change in production.  (And just
monday we also finally allocated another machine purely to test - hooray.)

Anyway, pier's change seems to work, but I'm a bit concerned about the
"forcing the gmail web client" and would like to see some feedback from
someone who understands this protocol better than I do and might have more
to say about the implications.

I'd love to see some things committed to 1.6.1.x though.
