implementation. Or at least that section of code causes another lock to be
held that doesn't look to be necessary.

The attached patch resolves the issue for me, but I am not certain that it
would be the final solution. I have asked the dev list to take a look and
see if the channel needs to be passed for any reason, and if so I'll try
and keep digging.
