Summary: Configuring settings in /etc/defaults/asterisk cause
the init.d process to stay on STDOUT
Description:
Using the /etc/defaults/asterisk file with
VERBOSITY=3
Continues to put all output to the STDOUT
Commenting the setting makes it work as expected.

I quickly tested all the options in /etc/defaults/asterisk on Debian
Squeeze.
VERBOSITY was the only setting that caused this.
For future reference can a category for "init.d", "contribs", "scripts" be
added.
