Bad magic number typically would trigger a segfault.

I think I've found the actual cause.  When we masquerade, it appears that
we weren't saving a reference to the original channel, so when we attempted
to unlink it from the channels list, it was effectively disappearing while
we worked on it.

Patch uploaded to fix this oversight (trunk only).
