going back to 2.1.0.4 and the problem is gone.
this issue was reported by alecdavid in 0015498 and it is NOT fixed and
should not have been merged into 2.2.0.2.

mantis-15724-2.patch looks safe, it's very similar to wctdm24xxp/base.c
echocan_create
mantis-15724-1.patch worked for me, except for reload, will try
mantis-15724-2.patch when box is back up.
