going back to 2.1.0.4 and the problem is gone. 

this issue was reported by alecdavid in 0015498 and it is NOT fixed and
should not have been merged into 2.2.0.2.

alecdavis:  We're talking about a different issue than what this is about,
but do you think you could try the head of the 2.2 branch now?  There is an
updated firmware image for the VPM module there.
