My biggest concern is the bandwidth available to set the hvac mode.  (As
well as switching out of it.)  Each register access to the slic IC has a
sizable sleep element with it. The indirect registers are even more
sizable.  

Let me try to get some calculations worked out to see what the time delay
is to place the device into and out of the hvac mode
