This is clearly not true in general, so please supply detailed information
about your computer that might suggest why it is different from the
average.

Also, what do you mean by the "the computer hangs".  There is nothing that
configure, or a non-install make, should be able to do that would cause a
bug free OS to hang, so a hanging computer is prima facie evidence of an OS
or hardware problem.  In fact you should be able to run configure and make
as a non-root user, and if it hangs then, you have a hardware problem, or
you have a denial of service, or worse, security problem in the OS.
