this is more or less my current SIP playground, that i want to share with
others.
maybe some of these ideas could be the starting point for properly
implemented features within asterisk. please feel free to use this for
inspiration.
some of the features are highly experimental. so be warned!

Great news. Let my try help you to get rid of your concerns:  :-)
What my patch (2007-04-05) for example does is make the XML content in
the
NOTIFY more complete (see RFC 4235). It doesn't change anything at all
about how pickup works in Asterisk, so it's not SIP-specific. This bug
should probably be renamed from "implement call pickup on Snom phones" to
something like "make the extension state notifications
RFC-4235-compliant".
(The Snom can use that additional information to make pickup possible but
that's just a side-effect.) I suggest this bug be about RFC 4235. If
something
should be done about changing about how pickup works in a
channel-independant
manner that should go to a seperate bug IMHO.
