I'll create a patch for 1.4 as soon as we figure out exactly what it's
supposed to be doing, but for now at least I uploaded a new patch for trunk
with the previous bug fixes plus the change to make everything consistently
use the MINIVM_ prefix (at least insofar as channel variables and
documentation for them goes.  I left all the internal variables alone).
