I use Slackware 11 (gcc 3.4.6)

With Slackware 10 and 11 you can select the kernel version to install.
Default is 2.4 but all my installations use the alternative 2.6.17.13
(packaged with Slackware). So the corrected subject is not true. The
problem it's only with gcc 3.4 , as i wrote in the initial report.
