On this Server is running Debian etch with kernel: 2.6.18-6-686 and
asterisk version: svn-114637 zaptel-version: 1.4.9.2

The same configuration is working with asterisk: svn-83620 and zaptel:

Hmm....if not the first call out of the system, then the zt_init_tone_state
EIP might be a red herring.  

Could you try this developmental version of zaptel on the chance that
we're running into a stack corruption issue?  Would be nice to rule it
out.
